A painless move for the Birmingham Children's Hospital

Relocations are always challenging, and moving a fully operational hospital posed a unique set of challenges.  Pickfords Business Moving took on the challenge and a partnership was formed with the hospital team which was recognised through the PFM Partnership Award for Relocation.

Pickfords Business Moving was commissioned to relocate Birmingham Children’s Hospital following the successful relocation of Edgware and Barnet Hospitals.  The move was to take place in just 12 days.

150 patients

Thirty thousand items of equipment and effects for 150 patients required 200 vehicle loads during the move, which included the transfer of five operating theatres, six intensive care beds, twenty wards, plus all diagnostic support laboratories and research centres.

The move itself was logistically complex as several external factors significantly increased the complexity of the operation.  Large areas of the city were closed for a political conference and careful planning of routes was necessary.  In addition, the BBC was in the hospital filming a series of ‘Children’s Hospital’

While Pickfords Business Moving was busy with the equipment, the in-patients were transferred to the new hospital during a three day period.  The final phase was the busy Accident and Emergency department.  It was vital that uninterrupted cover could be maintained so a new A & E department was set up at the new location prior to closing the old department and completing the move.
