Ask Amanda: How to pack a self storage unit

Tips from Amanda, our self storage expert

Need a little advice on packing your self storage unit efficiently? We asked Amanda, our self storage expert, for her top tips.

Ask Amanda
What's the number one thing people get wrong when packing a storage unit?

Amanda says
Not planning ahead! A little organisation before you start can save you a lot of time, effort and space later.

Here's Amanda's step-by-step guide to packing like a pro:

1. Plan before you pack

Amanda says
Make a list of everything you're storing. Write down what goes where in the unit. That way, when you need something, you'll know exactly where it is.

Her tips:

  • Place items you rarely need at the back of the unit
  • Keep items you might need regularly at the front.
  • Consider drawing a simple unit layout. It might sound extra, but it really helps when you're unpacking or accessing boxes later.

2. Pack items carefully

Amanda says
Always wrap items individually and use the right packing materials. It's worth it!

Her tips:

  • China & glassware: Wrap in white paper, then cushion with protective bubble wrap. Stand plates on their edges for extra strength.
  • Lamps: Remove bulbs, wrap the base in white paper and pack the shade separately.
  • Clothing: Use wardrobe cartons for clothes on hangers to avoid creases.
  • Mattress: Protect with a mattress bag to keep them clean and dry.

Pro tip from Amanda: Don't stack heavy items on soft furnishings. It's tempting, but it can ruin your sofas and chairs.

All packing materials can be purchased in store at our eco box shop.

3. Make the most of your space

Amanda says
Think vertical! Stack boxes neatly, but keep the ones you'll need accessible. You can also use shelving inside the unit if allowed - it's a real life saver.

Her tips:

  • Break down large items like flat-pack furniture to use less floor space.
  • Fill gaps in boxes with towels, linens or bubble wrap - nothing should move around.
  • Label every box clearly for easy access.

4. Don't forget the essentials

Amanda says
Keep a box of essentials for quick access - things like important documents, seasonal clothing, or tools you might need.

Also, make sure your items are insured if they're valuable. Pickfords Self Storage can help you arrange cover easily.

4. Check your unit

Amanda says
Step back and take a look at everything once it's in your unit. Can you still access what you need? Are fragile items safe? A quick review will save a lot of headaches later.

Packing a self storage unit doesn't have to be stressful. With a little planning, the right materials and Amanda's expert tips, your belongings will stay safe while in store and you'll make the most of every inch of your unit.
