Tips from Amanda, our self storage expert
Storing clothes might seem simple, but without the right preparation, fabrics can get creased, dusty or even damaged. So, how do you store clothes in self storage properly?
We asked Amanda, one of Pickfords' self storage experts, to share her advice.
Ask Amanda
What's the biggest mistake people make when storing their clothes?
Amanda says
Folding everything into boxes without thinking about the type of clothing. Heavy items crush delicate fabrics, and hanging clothes often get squashed if you don't use the right cartons.

Here's Amanda's guide to storing clothes like a pro.
1. Use wardrobe cartons for hanging clothes
Amanda says
Wardrobe cartons are specifically designed for clothes on hangers. They keep items upright and crease-free.
Tips:
- Hang your clothes on hangers before placing them in the carton.
- Add a line of tape across the top of the rail to keep hangers in place.
- Perfect for jackets, suits, dresses and shirts that need to stay in shape.
Pro tip from Amanda - Don't overload the carton. Give each hanger a little space so garments aren't squashed together.
You can purchase wardrobe cartons in store at our eco box shop.
2. Fold delicate or seasonal items carefully
Ask Amanda
What about clothes that aren't on hangers?
Amanda says
Use cartons for folded belongings like sweaters, tshirts, towels and bedding.
Tips:
- Fold neatly to reduce creasing.
- Don't overfill the carton. It makes it harder to close and increases pressure on items at the bottom.
- Please heavier items like coats at the bottom, lighter items like scarves at the top.
3. Protect fabrics from dust and moisture
Amanda says
Even in a clean storage unit, dust and humidity can affect clothes. Take a few precautions, just in case.
Tips:
- Store items in cartons rather than loose bags.
- Consider adding a breathable cover or garment bag for delicate or designer pieces.
- Keep the storage unit dry and ventilated.
4. Organise for easy access
Ask Amanda
How can I make sure I can find my clothes later?
Amanda says
Label everything clearly and think about how often you'll need each item.
Tips:
- Place seasonal items you won't need immediately at the back of the unit.
- Keep everyday items near the front.
- Make a simple inventory of boxes and contents. It saves time and prevents rummaging.
5. Consider long term storage
Amanda says
If clothes will be in storage for months, it's worth taking the extra care.
Tips:
- Avoid storing clothes in plastic bags long-term, as this can trap moisture.
- Use acid-free tissue paper to wrap delicate fabrics.
- Don't place heavy items on top of cartons with delicate clothes.
6. Insurance and peace of mind
Amanda says
If you're storing expensive or designer clothes, insurance is worth considering. It protects your investment while in storage.
