Ask Amanda: How to create a storage unit inventory

Tips from Amanda, our self storage expert

A storage unit is only as useful as your ability to find what's inside. That's why creating a storage unit inventory is essential. It saves time, prevents damage and gives you peace of mind.

We asked Amanda, one of Pickfords' self storage experts, to explain how to create the perfect inventory.

Ask Amanda
Why do people skip making an inventory?

Amanda says
They think it takes too long, or they'll remember where everything is. But over time, you may forget where you put things! An inventory keeps your unit organised and your experience stress-free.

Here's Amanda's step-by-step guide

1. Start with a list of what you are storing

Amanda says
Write down every item you are putting into store. Don't rely on memory, it's easy to forget small but important items.

Tips:

  • Include furniture, appliances, boxes and smaller personal items.
  • For businesses, list stock, office equipment and documents.
  • Note fragile or valuable items separately.

2. Label every box clearly

Ask Amanda
How should I label my boxes?

Amanda says
Be descriptive, consistent and clear. Your future self will thank you!

Tips:

  • Include the contents - e.g. 'Kitchen - glassware and china.'
  • Number of boxes.
  • Add 'Fragile' tape where necessary.

3. Organise boxes into categories

Amanda says
Grouping items makes access easier and keeps your units neat.

Tips:

  • Separate boxes by room or category.
  • Keep frequently accessed items near the front of the unit.
  • Store seasonal or rarely used items at the back.

4. Create a simple map of your storage unit

Ask Amanda
Is a map really necessary?

Amanda says
Absolutely!  A simple sketch showing where boxes and furniture are placed saves time and prevents unnecessary rummaging.

Tips:

  • Draw a floor plan of your unit and mark sections for different categories.
  • Number the boxes on the map to match your inventory list.
  • Update the map if you add new items or rearrange your unit.

5. Keep your inventory accessible

Amanda says
Your inventory is only useful if you can find it!

Tips:

  • Keep a digital copy on your phone.
  • Print a physical copy and store it in your unit in a folder.

6. Review and update regularly

Ask Amanda
How often do I update my inventory?

Amanda says
Every time you add or remove items. Even small changes matter. It keeps your unit organised and avoids surprises when you need something quickly.

Final thoughts from Amanda

Amanda says
A storage unit inventory will be your best friend. It keeps you organised, protects your belongings and saves time. It's worth the few extra minutes to do it right.
