Case study: University of Brighton - Cockcroft building relocation

Education

The University of Brighton is a community of over 21,000 students and 2,600 staff based on five campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.

The requirements

The provision of removal services from sections of the Cockcroft Building to the new Huxley Building. The building now provides approximately 8000m2 of general teaching and dedicated Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences space, including:

  • 300 seat lecture theatre (with separate access/egress for out-of-hours use)
  • 60 seat seminar rooms which have retractable partitions for conversion into small teaching rooms
  • Bespoke teaching and research laboratories
  • Academic and technical office accommodation

The building has multiple specialist services - including over 45 fume cupboards, various gases and water services; high security areas, and open student learning spaces.

The solution

Pickfords Business Solutions was appointed as the removals contractor to undertake a programme of relocations over several months including the transfer of lab equipment, teaching aids and resources, offices and crates.

Of particular importance was to minimise disruption to staff and students. An integral part of this was the involvement of a Move Manager to oversee the process from start to finish and post move assistance.

The result

The Huxley Building, now the university's new biosciences building, was opened by Professor Lord Robert Winston to critical acclaim.
