Waves of Change: Upcoming International Alliances, Strikes, and Border Changes
Gemini Cooperation
The transcontinental Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd will start in February 2025, shaping new main trades after the 2M Alliance commences its last voyage. VesselsPlus, the partnership will operate 27 majors trade routes and 30 shuttles, supported by up to 340 vessels (subject to Suez Canal access). They aim to improve service in the three key areas of reliability, connectivity and sustainability with an eye towards 90 per cent on-time performance. The plan continues to roll ahead, though regulators are eyeing competition concerns carefully. At the same time, insecurity in the Red Sea has led to route changes and an alternative strategy by MSC.
Industrial Actions at Australia’s major ports
Some of Australia’s biggest ports, such as Melbourne, Port Kembla and Brisbane, may witness industrial action with dockworkers expected to strike following a breakdown in contract negotiations between the workforce and their employer Qube. The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) said the action was supported by all workers, who have been without a contract since June and in negotiations since October 2020.
It notes that Qube has seen its profits soar while workers' wages have not even kept pace with inflation, meaning real purchasing power is down 14%. With the move in place, workers could start taking such actions as overtime bans and work stoppages of between one and 24 hours . In addition to comparable global labor disputes, the MUA is claiming that it is entitled to a slice of Qube's profits.
Border checks at the Schengen area
Austria, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden have extended their border checks from October to December 2024.
Effective September 16, Germany runs a border check at all land borders until March 15, 2025 with a possibility of extension.
Travelers are warned with a possible delay at the borders.
